Preparing Your Garden To Outlast Winter
While some may consider winter to be a time for plants to die, it is really a time to prepare your garden to be ready for new growth. Certain maintenance items are great to accomplish in the cooler months so that when the growing season arrives, your garden is ready to spring to life. Cold weather allows for great access to much of your garden for maintenance as foliage is not as full as other times in the year. Think of it much like emptying a room of furniture to have access to floors and walls for cleaning.
Trimming Hedges
Hedges provide a garden not only with a nice visual appearance by framing the space, they also act as buffers to harsh wind and weather for the rest of your plants. Take time in cooler months to trim hedges back to the shape and size you desire, so that when the warmer months approach you can focus on more important tasks.
Pruning Trees
Similar to your hedges, maintaining the shape and profile of your trees is an important maintenance item that can be done in the colder months. It is particularly important to do ahead of snow and ice accumulation, as loose or unhealthy branches may pose a safety risk by falling under the weight of snow and ice.
Mulching and Soil Care
Healthy soil is composed of a massive array of microorganisms and fungi that are essential for proper plant growth. No garden will thrive without life filled soil, and it is an important item to consider spending some time to maintain. Cover exposed areas with mulch so that the soil is protected from the worst of a hard freeze, and as the mulch decomposes it will add nutrients to feed the biosphere within the soil.
