About Winter Maintenance & Snow Removal Ruslip
It might seem like in the winter, when all the sensible plants are asleep under the snow or in the ground, waiting for spring, there isn’t much to do in your garden. Besides, who wants to be outside in the cold, the rain, and the mud, when they could be inside drinking tea and eating chocolate biscuits? There’s lots to do, however, and we can do it for you. From deadheading autumn flowers, to planting bulbs ready for springtime, we’ve got it covered. We’ll even help keep your garden free of snow to protect those tender plants that can’t survive the freezing temperatures otherwise. We’ll take on the winter chill for you and your garden, giving you more time alone with those biscuits.
Our Services
Shore Up
Winter is a time that can be difficult for plants, especially if they haven’t been prepared. Your autumn flowers need to be dead headed, so that they’re not expending energy trying to revive dead blooms. Your summer plants need pruning, as do your fruit trees, and any fragile or tender plants need to be moved inside and out of the cold.
Sowing
If you’re hoping for spring flowers- and who doesn’t appreciate sunny yellow daffodils or a cheerful patch of tulips- winter is the time to plant your bulbs. We know all the best ways to plant so that you get the best sprouting effect. It’s also time to plant any shrubs and wildflowers to attract bees and butterflies come spring.
Feed the Birds
It’s a little harder for everyone in the winter, but birds, hedgehogs, squirrels, and other critters help keep our gardens healthy. It’s only fair the help them in return. It’s time to leave out coconut shells filled with fat, nuts, and some seeds for the birds. A corner of your garden left unkempt, with some logs and leaves, makes a cosy hideaway for hedgehogs.
Harvest
Winter is the time to plant things like garlic and rhubarb, and fruit bushes like blackberry brambles, raspberries, and fruit trees. It’s also the time to harvest any root vegetables you grow (parsnips with Christmas dinner, anyone?), late apples, and inspect all your other crops. Anything that isn’t thriving will rot, and ruin the rest of your crop, so it’s important to weed it out.
Plan Ahead
This is the really fun part: dreaming about what you’ll plant. It’s time to buy seeds for all the flowers, fruits, and seeds you want to start planting in the spring. We’re experts in which plants should be planted together, and planning out where flower beds and vegetable gardens should be placed.
Protect
If you have outdoor taps, it’s important to isolate them and drain them. We can help make sure this is done, or insulate them otherwise, so that you don’t have to deal with burst pipes if there’s frost. Likewise, we’ll cover tender plants with materials to help them survive a freeze, like straw or fleece.
